K. Ho is a queer, non-binary artist of colour. In their body of work, K focuses on the joy and tenderness of living in intersectional margins, telling stories about love, struggle, recognition, and self. You can find them at parties hiding in the bathroom in a moderate way.

Setting the Table is a series of talks, performances, screenings and weave-ins that explore how different people share community and support one another. It is a showcase of LGBTQ and Two Spirit artists, activists and leaders who present work on intersectional issues and allyship.

Following K.’s talk, Paige Gratland will direct the group in an activity to help weave a portion of the place setting for the Branscombe House Pride Picnic and Social in August.

Kristin Nelson investigates the value of labour as seen through a disability studies lens and the body’s inevitable disintegration in time. By creating everyday utilitarian objects through time consuming practices such as weaving, Nelson questions the value of all mass manufactured objects and situates her work within the philosophical and theoretical discourses about labour. Her attempt to reposition how we view labour places value on the body itself, instead of on what the body produces.

Kirstin Nelson received her BFA in Visual Arts at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (2003) and MFA at Concordia University (2014.) She has exhibited work across Canada and abroad at: Musée Regional de Rimouski, Parisian Laundry, Skol (Québec); Art Toronto, Art + Design IDEA/EXCHANGE and Edition Toronto 2 (Ontario); the Winnipeg Art Gallery, La maison des artistes visuels francophone, Plug In ICA, Actul and RAW Gallery (Manitoba) and the Museo Textil de Oaxaca (Mexico). She is a mentor for MAWA and is on the board of Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba. Her work is available through Lisa Kehler Art + Projects and is in private and public collections including those of: Boralex, BMO, the Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Craft a leather emblem by learning basic techniques used in traditional cowboy boot design. Each participant will be provided a stencil to learn how to translate an image  into overlay and inlay. The group will use a skiving knife to bring a piece of leather to a feather edge, cut, assemble, glue and hammer their very own leather patch. The workshop will introduce sewing with a roller foot; if equipped, feel free to complete sewing at home, or have your instructor finish for pick up at a later date. Free to join, materials included, no previous experience required but recommended for 16 years +.  Workshop located at Branscombe House, 4900 Steveston Hwy, March 24 from noon to four pm.
